This radio was designed specifically as a car-portable. The speaker is mounted on the back panel so when used as a portable the sound radiates from the back of the radio. However, when laid on a car dashboard or parcel shelf so the dial markings and controls are the correct way the sound comes out at the top. If the speaker was in the front panel it would be muffled by the parcel shelf. This example doesn't work very well. Something to do with the RF circuit when used as a car radio. This seems to effect the radio on all wavebands producing very low sensitivity. I'll get around to fixing it one day.
