Originally used at sea for direction finding and also as a radio. Covers LW, MW and Marine Band. The circular top is a rotating disc with a red elongated arrow bisecting it. Underneath the disc is an arrangement of ferrite rod aerials, the disc being carried on a central bearing and rotated by a small electric motor. Somehow the whole arrangement causes the disc to rotate until it stops with the arrow pointing in the direction of the transmitter. Knowing the locations of the transmitters and the bearing on which they lie enables one to locate ones position. It still works and is probably accurate to a mile or so, quite adequate I suppose for sea navigation.
